Located in My Duc District, Huong pagoda festival is among the greatest Buddhist festival in Northern Vietnam. This Vietnamese festival plays a significant role in the spiritual life of Vietnamese Buddhists in particular and Vietnamese people in general. Huong pagoda festival lasts for three months 1st to the 3rd month in Lunar Calendar. However, the official opening day of the festival is actually on the 6th day of the first Lunar month.
1. Legend of Huong pagoda
According to folklore, a kind and beautiful princess Dieu Thien, who was the third daughter of King Dieu Trang, Huong Lam Kingdom. However, when the princess was mature, she refused all proposals from other countries and interested in a religious life. The King was angry and locked her into his palace. As the princess was stubborn, King Dieu Trang sent her to Bach Tuoc Pagoda and give her a wide range of difficult works.
However, she completed them all. Getting more and angrier, the King even set Bach Tuoc Pagoda on fire and jailed the princess into the forbidden palace. However, the princess’s decision was unchanged. Finally, King Dieu Trang decided to execute his daughter but Huong Tich Mountain God came in the form of a tiger and saved the princess.
Dieu Thien saw a handsome young man approaching her when she woke up in the forest. The handsome tried to talk with the princess but she kept on turning him down. Unexpectedly, the man turned out to be Buddha and advised Dieu Thien to practice Buddhist in Huong Tich Cave. Nine years later, the princess got enlightened. She protected her family from devils, saved the country from the war. After that, Dieu Thien was canonized as Goddess of Mercy (Quan Am) and was widely worshiped Huong Lam Kingdom.
2. Huong pagoda festival
Like other Vietnamese festivals, Huong pagoda festival is also separated into two parts including the ceremonies and the entertaining activities. Ceremonial rituals include incense offering procession and Zen ceremony. In Zen ceremony, Buddhists and Monks offer incense, candles, flowers and fruits. During the ceremony, two monks perform flexible and beautiful dances.
In contrast, entertaining activities include enjoying a boat cruise along Yen Stream for watching beautiful scenery, climbing the mountain and exploring caves. People believe that climbing up the top of Huong Tich Mountain will bring you fulfillment and great success.
Buddhists explore cave
If you have a chance to come to Huong Pagoda Festival, you can taste three famous delicacies which are grinding roots, Sang vegetables and bamboo shoot. Coming at the beginning of the festival, you will see red apricot flowers covering the entire area of Huong Son mountain. At the end of Huong Pagoda Festival, you can taste the irresistibly fresh flavor of the apricot juice.
